アユのつくる１�u程のなわばりは氷河期のなごりで、なわばりの中の藻類はアユ７匹が生きていけるだけの 量があるといわれる。が、今とは環境の違う氷河期では一匹生き残るだけでも大変だったのでしょう。したが って、なわばりをつくるという進化が生まれ、本能となって今に伝わっているとおもわれる。北海道以南、朝鮮 半島、台湾、中国に分布。奄美大島には亜種のリュウキュウアユPlecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensisが分布
